How to Install Your Hammock

Not sure how to install your hammock? It really depends on the setting and structure you are hanging it from, but we can give you some general tips. Most importantly:

Make sure whatever you hang it from will support your weight!

You can hang it from a ceiling, tree limb, hammock stand, swing set—up to you!

If you hang it from your ceiling:

  • First, locate the studs (no, not THAT stud 😉— the beams holding up your ceiling)

  • To locate your studs, you can purchase a stud finder at a hardware store for about $20.

  • Once you locate the studs, mark the ceiling with pencil to note where they are.

  • By hand, screw the hardware (included with your purchase) into the ceiling where the stud is. You might want to start the holes with a drill to make it a little easier for yourself.

  • The two holes should be no less than 4 feet apart and no more than 9 feet apart.

  • BE SURE you’ve screwed into the stud or else your hammock will come out of the ceiling while you’re sitting in it. 😬

If you hang it from your tree limb(s):

  • Install the hardware exactly like above, except you won’t need to locate a stud first.

  • Though you can also wrap a chain around the tree limb to hang the hammock, screwing the hardware into the tree limb is better for the health of the tree.

  • As a general rule, healthy tree branches that are larger in diameter than your arm will support your weight, though we suggest testing it out first.

If the structure you are hanging your hammock from is TOO HIGH or the two points are TOO WIDE apart, you can purchase chains at the hardware store in the length you need. Bring the S-hook we give you so you can ensure the S-hook fits in the chain links.
